Pastry Glazing Brush

Ok so the title for this post is more cooking related but dont worry i’m not turning into Gordon Ramsay.
When i was in my local Woolworths having a browse round since its closing fown and offering upto 50% off most items i thought it would be daft not to go in, so i was browsing round as you do and noticted how cheap pastry glazing brushes where and how similar to they are to the small detailing  / valeting brushes you see on various car detailing websites.
I managed to get a pack of two for around £1.59, there really soft and will be ideal for agitating wheel cleaning soloutions and getting in all the awkward places that alloy wheels seem to have such as the area around the bolt that holds your alloy wheel to the hub.

Atlasta Trialoy Wheel Brush

I thought this was going to be a good buy, but I have a feeling this brush might be sent back.
Ok after browsing the internet and a few car detailing sites I found the Atlasta Alloy Wheel Brush, what sold it to me were the acid resistant bristles, now the word stiff is one of those words that vary from person to person. When I received the Atlasta brush this morning I though woo that’s a mans wheel cleaning brush as it is quite large and looks to be very rugged and has that built to last appearance which I have no doubt to argue, but the bristles are very firm in my mind.
A few passes on my hand with minimal pressure I noticed my hand was really marked and very red. There’s hardly any give in the bristles of the brush and I really don’t feel confident on using this on my Alloy Wheels let alone anyone else’s so my search will carry on for a nice wheel brush.

Telescopic Tripod 500W Site Light

The first of my purchases was this Telescopic Tripod 500W Site Light from Screwfix.

Telescopic Tripod 500W Site Light

Telescopic Tripod 500W Site Light

After using 2 of these when i was doing some Paint Correction on a friends Vauxhall Astra T8 and It made spotting paint defects a lot easier and you weren’t bobbing and weaving up and down the cars panel all the time to check for locations of swirl marks and it is possible to do work undercover even if light is poor.
The Site Light cost me £20 delivered next day which is a great price since local building suppilers such as MKM and Travis Purkins where selling them at £28.
Theres a switch on the back of each lamp which enablews you to turn it on or off which is great if you only want one light on. Each 500w lamp swivels side to side and will also tilt up and down which is a great idea if you want to spread the light beam out
Since i’d pretty much built the lights in the living room i thought i’d try and capture how good they are.
Below is just the room illuminated by our normal light (With no flash)

Now with the Room light out and both Lights turned on

Now just one on you can see the difference near the curtain

Overall i’m really impressed with the build quality and illumination that the lights give, but thats in my living room hopefully i’ll get to try them out on Saturday.

Update: 21/12/2008

I used the Tripod 500W Site Light on Saturday for aobut 5 hours with out any problems at all. and it was nice to be able to turn one of the lamps off and just work with the one lamp lit. These definetly where a bargin buy and i dont know how i have managed with out them. Oh and there great at warming your hands up in this cold weather.

Car Valeting Supplies

Ok just because there hasn’t been a new post in a few days it doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy. During last night I have ordered a few essential valeting supplies some trusty old friends have been re ordered and some new, all in order to test them out so you don’t have too.

Atlasta Wheel Brush: I needed a Alloy wheel brush that was acid resistant.

Dura Seal:  Well I needed a sealant and for 3.79 Litres at £10 its got to be worth a try.

Collinite 476 Wax: Trusted old wax I have used many times before.

Sponge Applicators: Only cost £1.25 each will be ideal for hand polishing.

Chemical Guys Wheel Guard: Used some before and thought it was worth a purchase.

Clay: EXTRA FINE DETAILING CLAY 3 x 60g BARS, I needed some clay as I tend to one bar per car and then send it to the bin or keep it of alloys

Clay Lube:  Sonus Glyde Detailing Clay Lubricant bought since I am valeting a friend’s car on Saturday.

Site light 500w Twin head: Bought from screwfix for under £20 it will keep my hands warm in the winter as well as inspecting panels for swirl marks.

Dodo Juice Sample Product Testing Update 1 5/12/08

I know its only been a few days since the Dodo Juice Samples where applied but it i cant see my car staying to clean for long.
I took a full boot lid picture this morning as you can see below

Full Boot View

Ford SportKa Dodo Juice Product Sample Review

On the photo you can see I have split it into the 3 areas the left side is covered with one coat of Chemical Guys Jetseal 109 which is now about 3 months old.

From the middle to the furthest right black line is freshly clayed paint and then sealed with 3 coats of Red Mist. This area the beading is very fine and tightly packed.

And the far right is polished with Super Resin Polish and 3 coats of Red Mist. Where the little pink line is to the end of the panel I noticed a slight difference in the beading pattern, in between the smallest beads there was only the paintwork no finer or tiny beading from the black line to the pink line the is very fine beading with almost mist in between the fine beading

The only thing I can think that might make a difference here would be the amount of pressure applied when polishing but even when you look near the bottom of the panel the average size of the beading is alot smaller compared to how it beads directly above it.

Final picture which is mainly focusing on the test area

1: Clayed, Red Mist x3
2/3: Clayed, Polished, Red Mist x3

I have left The Lilac Quick Detailer till last, as you may have seen on my other post, i only applied this to a small area as i didnt want to kill any beading but when i checked this morning you couldnt tell where i had used it, this could be due to not having any wax and only a sealent on my car.

I am interested to see how this shapes up next week.

Meguiar’s G220 Dual Action Video

Ok, so some of this video does seem to be bit of a sales pitch on Meguiars side like using there car polish and car wax, but i did find it really useful for pointers on using the Meguiars G220 before i started polishing my first car with it.

Dodo Juice Sample Product Testing

Ok so this afternoon I washed my car and used Lilac Quick Detailer – Time To Dry on my rear quarter panel. I only did it in a small area as I wanted to see how the beading would be effected so below is a picture of before.

Panel Test Rear

Ford SportKa Rear Quater Dodo Juice Product Sample

I sprayed Lilac Quick Detailer on to the area and dried with my towel I noticed the water dispersed a lot quicker from the panel into the towel than normal and in general a lot less effort was needed to get the smaller water droplets removed.
This shine on the area did seem mildly improved over how I remember it. Only time will tell how the beading will be affected so i will keep my eye on it.

Red Quick Detailer – Red Mist TEST

On my Boot Lid i tested Red Quick Detailer – Red Mist I decided to split it into three sections the left hand side I have left with Chemical Guys Jetseal 109 on and the right hand side I clayed and then applied 2 coats of Autoglyms Super Resin Polish. When I had buffed the final coat off it was really noticeable which side had been polished even with really cold hands as mine where.

I then sprayed Red Mist on to the area and did a wipe on and wipe off technique until no trace was left i found it was better not to spray loads on the panel as it seemed to be harder work to buff it off.
I then repeated this twice too both areas both polished and unpolished. When I had finished you couldn’t tell the difference in touch between the polished and none polished area. When it rains it will be interesting to see which area beads the best and how long it lasts.

Dodo Juice Pre Production Samples

I received some Pre production samples today from Dodo Juice which was pleasant surprise and was really nice to see a big company looking after the little guys.

The next bit is a long read but I found many tips and pointers in each section that I went through, so I’m just pretty much just putting in what Dodo Juice have told me about recent developments.

The Word from Dodo Juice

Almost as soon as we had introduced our waxes, people asked us about a quick detail spray. Earlier this year, we had produced what I referred to as ‘Dodo Milk’, a very thick carnauba solution with high solids content.
However, although some initial testing showed it to be a match for many quick detailers, it couldn’t match the performance of spray sealants when it came to water repellence or durability.

Over the coming months, we looked at the Quick Detailer market in more detail, and came to the conclusion that there were four distinct areas of application:

Light Cleansing
Protection
Drying
Claying

We realised that many people were using one Quick Detailer, like Meguiars Last Touch, for many of these applications. Unfortunately, products are rarely as versatile as you think, and we realised that we could tweak the products to make them more suitable to each individual task.

Clay Lube

We have therefore developed a separate clay lube that performs extremely well at a very economical cost (dilutes 10:1 rather than Last Touch at 1:1). We don’t believe in using plain water (even if you can with most clays) because the clay lube can have cleaning agents in to increase the effectiveness of the clay and lubrication is critical so it is best to have as much of it as possible (although some clays may include products that react with water to give it some lubricity, the effect is likely to be less than with a dedicated ‘external lube).

Drying Aid

WE also developed a separate Drying Aid. This is because people like to use a QD (Quick Detailer) to help prevent marring and swirl marks during the drying process (water droplets and dry towels are hardly lubricious, and any remaining sediment or dirt could be rubbed into the paintwork during a contact process). So our ‘Drying Detailer’ is designed to decrease the surface tension of sitting water, increasing its surface area and thus allowing easier drying or evaporation with less chance of ‘spotting’ or water marks. We alsotweaked it to include an agent that inhibits the effects of limescale, making water marks less noticeable than they would otherwise be (although it may not prevent them fully, nor will it prevent dirt or other sediment forming water marks). The detailer is also lubricious to help prevent marring caused by any remaining dirt particles. The side effect of this product is that its hydrophilic nature means it kills the beading provided by our waxes, which is a shame at best and something that could be mistaken for premature failure of the wax at worst. The reality is that the wax layer is still going strong beneath the layer of QD, but we needed something that would bring the beading back this leads us onto…

Protection Detailer

This was the trickiest product to get right, because the carnauba solids content in normal Quick Detailers is about 3-4 per cent, about a tenth of what is in a paste wax. So the protection is going to be about a tenth as well. Our first three prototypes were natural-based and performed well for what they were – our trial against Field Glaze with the third prototype showed identical or better performance, for example. But the market had moved on and people were using spray sealant products like Zaino Z8 as ‘Quick Detail’ sprays. Swissvax Nano and Meguiars Ultimate Quick Detailer are also in this class. The performance on bare paint from a spray sealant is far superior to that of a carnauba Quick Detailer. We therefore decided to do a pure ‘high performance’ Quick Detailer, but this would naturally be more expensive than a standard QD and the solvent content of these products often makes them unsuitable for use with clay bars as well (hence the need for a separate clay lube).

The alternative would have been for us to introduce a natural carnauba Quick Detailer that would have done an OK job, and been cheaper than Field Glaze, but it would have been wiped out by Zaino Z8 in comparison tests.
Even if we explain that chalk and cheese are being compared, people will assume we are trying to justify poorer performance. So if you cant beat them, join them…

Light Cleansing

Any light solvent solution will have cleaning capabilities and be able to remove the dust and finger marks that Quick Detailers are typically used to eradicate. Therefore, our Drying and Protection Quick Detailers will be efficient at light cleansing duties, with the Drying Quick Detailer being the most suitable. For deeper soiling, a dedicated cleanser like Lime Prime or Lime Prime Lite would be recommended.

Ok so where finally on to the important information about the directions of use and information about the 2 products that Dodo Juice sent me.

Dodo Juice Samples

Dodo Juice Samples Red Mist & Lilac Dryer

Red Quick Detailer – Red Mist

This is our spray sealant ultra high performance ‘protection detailer’. It has a volatile solvent in it to carry the polymer sealant, so it does smell more alcoholic than normal… Unfortunately you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs and there are reasons why sealants and hybrid waxes like Collinite don’t smell quite as attractive as more natural waxes.

Dodo Juice - Red Quick Detailer - Red Mist

Dodo Juice - Red Quick Detailer - Red Mist

Red Mist
Dodo Juice Red Mist is a high performance protection Quick Detailer, designed to fortify wax already applied to the car – or protect bare paintwork if time is limited.
Containing sophisticated synthetic ingredients, it boasts superior shine, protection and durability compared to normal Quick Detail sprays.

Use
Ensure that paintwork is clean and dry. Shake bottle before use, then spray Red Mist onto panel and buff off with a soft, clean microfibre cloth, folding regularly.
Do not apply more Red Mist until previous traces have been buffed and smearing has disappeared.

Lilac Quick Detailer – Time To Dry
Our drying aid ‘Drying Detailer’. Not much to report here, apart from the fact that’s its able to be used as a general high-shine Quick Detailer. It kills beading though, so we didn’t want to use it as our benchmark QD.

Dodo Juice Lilac Quick Detailer Time To Dry

Dodo Juice Lilac Quick Detailer Time To Dry

Time To Dry
Dodo Juice Time To Dry is a dedicated drying aid, designed to reduce the chances of marring during the drying process where rinse water and a dry microfibre are being used against the surface of the paint. By introducing lubrication, ay remaining dirt or sediment is less likely to marr the surface.

Time To Dry also contains ingredients to minimise water spots, by reducing limescale deposits and breaking up water beads. In addition, this bead busting behaviour increases the surface area of sitting water, making it easier to soak up with a microfibre.

Note:
This product can be used as a general ‘non beading’ high shine quick detail spray, as well as a dedicated drying aid.

Use
Ensure the car has been washed thoroughly. Spray Time To Dry onto wet panels and then soak up water with a soft and clean microfibre. Dabbing is preferable to wiping fold towel regularly and when dry, buff to a shine.

How To Machine Polish Your Car

When i was looking at purchasing my Meguiar’s G220 I did a lot of research on technique and picking up pointers.
These following 3 videos are the most useful that I found.

ArmorAll – Polishing Cloth

These ArmorAll Polishing Cloths where in my local Tesco’s at £1.90, after a quick look around I noticed that they where slightly cheaper than the usual Tesco’s own brand Polishing / Microfibre Cloth.
Ok with the Tesco’s own brand you get two cloths but they aren’t the best I have seen.
With the ArmorAll cloths there’s a small hole in the packaging and you can really feel how soft and thick these cloths are.
You only get one ArmorAll Polishing cloth per pack but I feel that in this situation quality out weights quantity.

Armorall Polishing Cloth

Armorall Polishing Cloth

The Cloths measure 38cm x 38cm or 18” x 18” at this size and price they are above average in there product range.

Armorall Polishing Cloth Size

Armorall Polishing Cloth Size

The pile on the ArmorAll cloth is relatively short compared to other cloths I have seen, such as some of the Eurow Cloths which seem to be more a final buff and rub down cloth.
